HRM-RI Member Listserv FAQs

HRM-RI members who wish to do so may now join a special hrmissues listserv, designed to promote communication among HRM-RI members about HR-related topics. Subscribers to this listserv can use it to ask or answer questions, to seek or give advice, and to post information of interest to their fellow HR practitioners. To learn more before subscribing, read the FAQs below.

We especially recommend reviewing these FAQs if you have never belonged to a listserv before and the concept is unfamiliar to you. Click on any question below to jump directly to the answer, or scroll down to read all of the questions and answers. If you still have any questions or concerns after reviewing these FAQs, please contact our webmaster.

Q.

What is a listserv?

A.

A listserv, or list server, is a small program that automatically sends messages to multiple e-mail addresses on a mailing list. When someone subscribes to a listserv, that person's e-mail address is added to the mailing list. When someone unsubscribes, that person's e-mail address is removed from the mailing list.

Q.

What's special about the HRM-RI member listserv?

A.

Our listserv is special for two reasons. First, it is a private listserv. This means that only members of HRM-RI may subscribe to it; no one else can participate. Second, any subscriber to our member listserv can use it to send appropriate messages to all other subscribers, and to receive their replies.

Q.

Why would I want to join this listserv? How could it benefit me?

A.

If you had an HR-related question or problem, you could use our listserv to ask your fellow HRM-RI members for information or advice. Sometimes you might be able to help other members by providing information or advice in reply to their messages. You could alert your fellow members to important HR issues and ask them to get involved.

The whole point of our listserv is to facilitate discussion and communication among our members. We hope you will find this listserv to be a valuable professional networking tool and information resource. If not, just unsubscribe at any time.

Q.

How do I subscribe to the HRM-RI member listserv?

A.

Login to the Members Only part of our site and use the Listserv Subscription Form there. If you can not login because you have forgotten your HRM-RI username and password, contact our webmaster for assistance.

Q.

If I don't subscribe right now, can I do so later?

A.

You don't have to join the listserv immediately. You can subscribe at any time, as long as you are still an active member of HRM-RI. Just login to the Members Only part of our website and use the Listserv Subscription Form there.

Q.

How do I send a message through this listserv? Is it complicated?

A.

Once you've subscribed, it's very easy to send a message to all other subscribers. You can use the same e-mail application you ordinarily use, such as Outlook, AOL, MSN, Hotmail, etc. Simply send your message to the listserv e-mail address, which is hrmissues@hrm-ri.talklist.com -- and the listserv program will automatically distribute it to all subscribers. Replying to a message received from the listserv is equally easy. Just do whatever you would normally do when replying to any type of e-mail message.

The only restriction is that you must send your message or reply from the e-mail address for which you are subscribed. In other words, if you subscribe to our listserv as johndoe@aol.com, your message or reply must be sent from that address. You might have another e-mail account as jdoe@msn.com, but you won't be able to send messages to the listserv from that other address. This restriction is how we insure that only subscribed HRM-RI members can use the listserv.

Q.

If I subscribe to this listserv, will I get a lot more e-mail?

A.

Yes, you will get more e-mail if you join our listserv. Whenever any subscriber sends a new message or a reply through the listserv, you will receive it. You will get replies to messages sent by other subscribers as well as replies to the messages you send. However, keep in mind that only HRM-RI members can use this listserv and only for appropriate messages. Joining our listserv will NOT increase the amount of spam (unwanted e-mail) which you receive.

Q.

Can you guarantee that I won't get more spam? Is my privacy protected?

A.

The HRM-RI member listserv is a private listserv completely controlled by HRM-RI. We will NOT provide the e-mail addresses of subscribers to any other organization and we will permanently bar anyone from our listserv who uses it inappropriately. You will NOT receive more spam (unwanted e-mail) because of joining our listserv.

Q.

What types of messages are appropriate for this listserv?

A.

HRM-RI members may use our listserv to pose HR-related questions, to ask for advice regarding HR-related problems or issues, to discuss HR-related topics, or to seek information about specific HR-related products and services. All messages must be professional in content and tone.

Q.

What types of messages are NOT appropriate for this listserv?

A.

The HRM-RI member listserv may NOT be used for personal messages or to solicit donations to any organization other than HRM-RI. Although discussion of political issues is legitimate and encouraged, the listserv may NOT be used to promote or endorse specific candidates. The listserv may NOT be used by any subscriber to promote the products or services of his/her own organization, except in reply to another listserv subscriber who is actively seeking information about specific HR-related products or services.

Listserv messages will be monitored by the listserv administrator. Anyone who sends an inappropriate message will receive a warning; if the problem persists, that subscriber will be barred from the listserv.

Q.

If I try the listserv and don't like it, how do I unsubscribe?

A.

You can unsubscribe easily at any time. Just follow the simple unsubscribe instructions which are included at the bottom of every message sent through the listserv, or login to the Members Only part of the HRM-RI site and use the
Listserv Unsubscribe Form there.

If you have any trouble unsubscribing, contact our webmaster and ask to be removed from the listserv mailing list.

Q.

Can you guarantee that the unsubscribe really works?

A.

Some senders of SPAM include fake unsubscribe links which don't really remove you from their mailing list. In fact, using those fake unsubscribe links only confirms that your e-mail address is valid, which means that you get even more SPAM. However, the HRM-RI listserv is NOT like that. We guarantee that you will be promptly removed from our listserv if you choose to unsubscribe.

Q.

I've joined but I'm not getting any messages -- what's wrong?

A.

When you subscribe to the listserv, you should immediately receive a brief confirmation message indicating that your request to join has been received and is pending approval by the listserv administrator. A short time after that, you should receive a brief confirmation that your request to join has been approved, and also a longer welcome message with some guidelines for using the listserv.

If you do not receive these messages, then there is a high probability that a personal or corporate spam-filtering program has blocked them. This program willl continue to block all messages sent to you through the listserv, unless you take some action to let hrmissues messages get through your spam filters. Contact our webmaster for advice or speak with your company's IT administrator about this problem.

If you discover that you can not receive hrmissues listserv messages at your company e-mail address and your IT administrator is unwilling or unable to adjust spam filtering to let our listserv messages get through, then you may wish to subscribe from your personal e-mail address instead of your company address.
See next FAQ below.

Q.

What should I do if I need to change my e-mail address for the listserv?

A.

If you wish to subscribe to the hrmissue listserv from a different e-mail address than the one you used when you originally signed up, here's what to do:

  • Unsubscribe from the listserv by using the instructions at the bottom of any listserv message received at the e-mail address you no longer wish to use;

  • OR unsubscribe by logging into the Members Only part of the HRM-RI site and using the Listserv Unsubscribe Form there, entering the e-mail address you no longer wish to use;

  • Rejoin the listserv by using the Listserv Subscribe Form in the Members Only part of our site, entering your new e-mail address.

If you have any difficulty following the above instructions, contact our webmaster for assistance.

Q.

May I subscribe to the listserv from more than one e-mail address?

A.

Yes, you may. Some members find it useful to sign up for the listserv with both a company e-mail address AND a personal e-mail address. This allows them to use the listserv at home and at the office.

If you are already subscribed at one e-mail address and you wish to subscribe at a second e-mail address, login to the Members Only part of the HRM-RI site and use the Listserv Subscription Form, entering the second e-mail address. Note that you will receive all listserv messages at BOTH addresses.
