Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts
"The Healthy Rhode Island Reform Act of 2008"
Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts will discuss current legislative issues facing
RI employers including The Healthy Rhode Island Reform Act of 2008 that she recently introduced, intended to provide comprehensive healthcare reform for all Rhode Islanders.

Christopher F. Koller, RI Health Insurance Commissioner
"Rhode Island Health Insurance Market -- Key Trends & Initiatives"
Christopher F. Koller will provide an update on the current RI health insurance market, including some key trends and initiatives his office has implemented to offer
alternative healthcare programs for RI employers and employees.

Michael P. Aitken, SHRM's Director of Government Affairs
"SHRM's Legislative Agenda -- 2008 and Beyond"
Michael Aitken will provide an update of SHRM’s Legislative Agenda
including H.R. 5515 the New Employee Verification Act of 2008, Immigration Reform,
the Healthy Families Act, the ADA Restoration Act, as well discuss
other pertinent legislation and provide insight into potential trends for 2009
pending the outcome of the Presidential Election.

"Recent Court/Legislative Decisions Affecting Employers"
Francis P. Alvarez will review some of the recent key legislative and
court decisions at the federal and state level in the areas of: FMLA, ADA, Title VII, and Wage and Hour updates as well as a comprehensive review of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 which expands the Military Leave provisions of FMLA.

Luncheon Program Will Feature In-Depth Panel Discussion

The Luncheon Program will feature an in-depth panel discussion with several RI legislators. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with Rhode Island legislators at lunch and speak with them about current workplace legislation that is pending in the Rhode Island General Assembly as well as other issues of importance to them.

Linda S. Lulli, SPHR, Associate VP of Human Resources at Bryant University, member of the RISC SHRM Legislative Affairs Committee and Chair of the Legislative Affairs and Public Policy Committee for the RI Business Group on Health will introduce the SHRM RI Legislative Agenda and facilitate the panel discussion with invited legislators and government officials.

The Rhode Island State Council of SHRM will provide a copy of the  SHRM RI Legislative Agenda in advance of the Luncheon Program.

We will also present our 2008 Public Servant Award in recognition of a public official who has promoted, sponsored, or initiated legislation that has demonstrated awareness of the value of involvement of human resource professionals in the legislative process and has affected positive changes in workplace legislation.
