Administered by the RI Depts. of Human Services, Labor & Training, and Revenue

Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Jobs Now Rhode Island is a jobs
creation program that will, for a limited time, reimburse eligible businesses 100 percent of
wages for qualifying hires.
The program, which runs through September 30, 2010, is ideal for businesses preparing to expand
their workforce, because it gives employers the opportunity to evaluate and train workers
before fi nancially committing to long-term hires. Companies that retain the Jobs Now workers
beyond the duration of the program may qualify for additional tax credits.
The Jobs Now Rhode Island program is also well suited for businesses desiring temporary
and/or seasonal help during the spring and summer months.
Eligible businesses must be current on all tax obligations, in good standing with the Dept. of
Revenue, covered by Workers Compensation and not debarred from contracting with an
agency that administers federal funds. Businesses that are currently experiencing layoffs, certified
for Trade Adjustment Act assistance in the area they wish to hire, or enrolled in the WorkShare
program are not eligible. Jobs Now Rhode Island hiring cannot be used to reinstate or replace
recently laid-off workers.
Qualifying job applicants must be unemployed or underemployed Rhode Islanders with minor children
in their care, and must be screened for eligibility through the Dept. of Human Services. The
Dept. of Labor and Training will work with employers to help match job openings with appropriately
skilled candidates.
Contact the Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island (401-462-8730), Workforce
Solutions of Providence/Cranston (401-861-0800), or the Dept. of Labor and Training
Business Services Unit (401-462-8724), for recruiting information.

HRM-RI Receives SHRM 2009 Merit Chapter Award
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) in Alexandria, VA has awarded the Merit Chapter designation to the Human Resource Management Association of Rhode Island (HRM-RI) for its scope of work in perpetuating and supporting the mission of the organization in 2009.
SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management, with more than 250,000 members in over 140 countries, and more than 575 affiliated chapters.
HRM-RI is one of 32 chapters receiving the distinction in SHRM's Northeast Region comprised of 11 states and 95 affiliated chapters.
"This recognition is a distinct indication of the chapter's successful partnership with SHRM to serve the networking and professional development needs of human resource professionals and to the advancement of the human resources profession," noted
Pamela J. Green, SPHR, Chief Membership Officer for SHRM.
HRM-RI receives a Certificate of Recognition, a specialized banner to display at its meetings and events, and is being recognized in SHRM's publications and at its conferences.

Have You Joined the HRM-RI Members Listserv?
HRM-RI members who wish to do so may join a special private listserv,
designed to promote communication among our members about HR-related
topics.
Subscribers to this listserv can use it to ask or answer questions,
to seek or give advice, and to post information of interest to their
fellow HR practitioners.
You can learn more about how our private member listserv works by reading the listserv FAQs page.
Please note that HRM-RI members are NOT automatically subscribed to this listserv when they first join HRM-RI. You must specifically opt-in (subscribe) if you wish to participate in the listserv. Learn how now!
Have You Designated HRM-RI As Your Chapter?
SHRM affiliate chapters, including ours, rely on direct and indirect sources of revenue to bring quality programs to their members.
One such source of revenue is from SHRM itself. The CFSP (Chapter Financial Support Program) sends money back to the chapter each quarter.
This additional source of revenue costs you nothing, but it provides HRM-RI with much needed revenue.
How does it work? We get credit for each chapter member who is ALSO a member of SHRM. However, SHRM only knows this to be the case when these members designate us as their official local chapter.
This is easily accomplished by completing the Chapter Designation Form, found on our website under the “Members Only” tab. Simply print, complete, and mail the form, and you're all set!
Click here to login and access the Chapter Designation Form
If you are a Dual Member (a member of both SHRM and HRM-RI), please complete and send this form at your earliest opportunity.
If you are NOT a member of SHRM and want to consider joining, please send an email to any of the HRM-RI Officers or Board Members for more information. First time SHRM members may also qualify for a discount on their first year of membership. They will be happy to answer your questions.
