Why Attend ADA Updates?
The Supreme Court has issued some critical ADA decisions over the past years concerning who is covered under the law, seniority versus disability rights, and what is a reasonable accomodation. We will review those issues plus other issues that keep arising:
- How to recognize a reasonable accomodation request (even if those words aren't used)
- When can medical documentation be required?
- How to handle employees who are underperforming due to medical issues
About the Presenter
Kathy Gips is Director of Training at the New England ADA Center, one of ten ADA centers funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research to provide technical assistance and guidance on the Americans with Disabilities Act and related state and federal law. She has over 15 years of experience in the disability field.

SHRM Federal Legislative Alert: H.R. 5515, "New Employee Verification Act" (NEVA)
On May 6, SHRM CEO Sue Meisinger will appear before the House Ways and Means' Subcommittee on Social Security to testify in support of H.R. 5515, "New Employee Verification Act" (NEVA).
This important bipartisan piece of legislation, sponsored by Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX) and cosponsored by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) and Rep. Dennis Moore (D-KS) provides a comprehensive approach to electronic employment verification. The SHRM-led HR Initiative for a Legal Workforce strongly supports NEVA, as it would replace the current ineffective federal government's employee verification process with a new electronic verification system.
Please contact your Member of Congress today and urge him or her to sign-up as a cosponsor H.R. 5515. Click here for more details.
Senior HR Professionals Enjoyed Dinner, Speaker on April 22
by David L. Goldman, SPHR, President of HRM-RI
 |
|
On Tueday, April 22, HRM-RI held a Senior-level HR Dinner at the Waterview Restaurant in downtown Providence. Our presenter, John Doran, Esq. , of the firm Littler Mendelson, gave the attendees a sobering view of the strategic and tactical methods employed by the modern labor union. While this information itself was eye-opening and sparked several conversations, the discussion of the main topic - The Employee Free Choice Act - was at a level of its own.
The attending group left this meeting with a much clearer understanding of the implications of this recurring piece of legislation. Not only was there concern over the Bill itself, but also the "ripple effects" that would occur, should this legilation be reintroduced and then pass.

|
Right Management graciously sponsored the event, and we are grateful for their support.

Feedback thus far suggests that John Doran gave us a compelling and insightful presentation, leaving the attendees wiser and better informed.
More such events will be coming, and membership suggestions as to the topic are always welcome! Please contact us at any time through this site, or send e-mails directly to
