February is Black History Month
Celebrate by Donating to Rhode Island Foundation's Black Philanthropy Initiative
The Black Philanthropy Initiative is a field-of-interest fund at The Rhode Island Foundation.
It was established by the Foundation and a group of community leaders to advance equity and social justice for Blacks in Rhode Island.
In 2010, BPI is focused on raising $1 million dollars. The Foundation will match every dollar raised, resulting in a permanent
endowment that will grow and make grants in perpetuity. The campaign is guided by a campaign committee of committed volunteers.
Grantmaking in years one and two will focus on economic sustainability and the Black family in the areas of housing, financial literacy, and job training.
BPI accepts personal and corporate gifts of any size, and there are a number of avenues for giving. With a gift of $10,000 or more, the inidividual or organzation will be
recognized as a major donor. And of course, contributions are tax-deductible to the full extent allowable by law.
Many corporations now have programs to match employee gifts of cash or stock, either in whole or in part. In some cases, gifts from spouses, directors, and retired employees will be matched. Learn more about how you or your organization can get involved at: http://www.rifoundation.org

WIPA/PABSS Funding Extension Benefits People with Disabilities Who Want to Work
The Congress recently passed, and President Obama signed into law the WIPA and PABSS Reauthorization Act of 2009. The bill extends funding for the Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) and the Protection and Advocacy for Beneficiaries of Social Security (PABSS) programs through fiscal year 2010.
Right now, there are 103 WIPA programs across the nation working with Social Security disability beneficiaries on job placement, benefits planning, and career development. With this support, beneficiaries are better equipped to make informed choices about work.
The PABSS program provides advocacy services to help beneficiaries navigate through the web of Employment Networks, Social Security rules, legal issues, and employment issues.

Top 50 Organizations for Multicultural Business Opportunities Announced on January 21, 2009
DiversityBusiness.com has announced the Top 50 Organizations
for Multicultural Business Opportunities for 2008. Over 650,000 diversity business owners had the opportunity to participate in an online election to determine the Top
organizations. The honor extends to another forty-nine major corporations and is collectively called The Div50. This esteemed, elite list is coveted by the
most successful companies in the U.S. The list has become the most recognized and respected compilation of companies that truly
differentiate themselves in the market place in a time when diversity has never been more important.
"The election of Barack Obama as the next President of the United States has changed the course of history and thereby the world as we know it", said
Kenton Clarke, CEO of DiversityBusiness.com. "The great diversity and vision of our country and our people have made this possible and DiversityBusiness.com
is proud to have been a force in the business world for such positive change and opportunity. The initiative that we have led has been instrumental in equalizing
the playing field and for that we are very honored indeed."
The 9th annual list was produced by DiversityBusiness.com, the nation's leading multicultural B2B online website. Over 650,000 businesses were asked 10 questions
regarding diversity. Their decisions were based on factors such as volume, consistency and quality business opportunities granted to women and minority-owned companies.
Other large companies at the top of the list include Coca Cola, Cisco, Dell, Toyota, Office Depot, and Home Depot.
Top Honors for Top Corporations
While other awards and Top lists crown companies for metrics such as overall economic growth and returns to shareholders, The Div50 is an indicator of which
organizations provide the best and the most business for diversity-owned companies. "In a marketplace that is increasingly as sensitive to diversity as it is to
revenues, awarding the top buyers of multicultural products and services is becoming a natural part of the new socioeconomic food chain. Organizations that consistently buy
the most products and services from diversity businesses, and that sustain the most mutually beneficial business relationships with their multicultural suppliers,
should be recognized not only by the business community but also by the general public. That is what we have accomplished in creating The Div50," said Kenton Clarke.
The Business Power of Diversity
As multicultural and female owned businesses gain more buying power and their lifestyles become more affluent, multicultural markets are growing in economic muscle.
This in turn attracts more corporations, as they compete for market share. The Div50 list has therefore become the consumer guide for women and minority consumers.
"As a diversity business owner, I appreciate the business we receive from corporate buyers; and in turn, when I buy products and services, either personally
or for my company, I am much more likely to buy from the same companies that support my business or are supporting businesses like mine," said Edgar L. Smith, CEO of
World Packaging Company headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Div50
The Div50 is a listing of the top 50 corporate and organizational buyers of diversity products and services throughout the U.S.
It represents the voice of over 650,000 diversity-owned (women, African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Native American, and other multicultural groups)
businesses in the U.S., in sectors such as technology, manufacturing, food service and professional services. It has become the Gold Standard to
its members and their associates and reaches millions of consumers every year. In nine short years, it has become a highly valued metric of corporate
excellence in the diversity space.
The winning companies will be honored at a special awards ceremony at the 9th Annual Multicultural Business Conference, taking place
April 29 -May 1, 2009 at Disney's Contemporary Resort, Orlando, Florida. A complete list of winners is available at: www.diversitybusiness.com.
