A Message From HRM-RI's President

Lynn Watterson, SPHR

Dear Members,

September is here and with it a new program year for HRM-RI. Plans are underway for several events in the upcoming months, so be sure to check the website often.

Our first breakfast meeting on September 20, 2006 will feature Bruce Katcher sharing his insights into "Why Your Employees are Unhappy and What You Can Do About It." I’m sure that every one of us has faced an unhappy employee or two, (or more), so this topic should be of interest to everyone. In addition, this is a great time of year to reconnect and network after the busy vacation season, so register today!

Our October Professional Day will feature a keynote speaker and workshops on talent management: how to find it, both within and outside the organization; ideas for developing talent, and keeping it; and retaining the skills and knowledge of employees who leave the organization. Anyone with a suggestion for a topic or speaker, please let us know. Our November meeting speaker is Janet LeTourneau who will advise us on "Satisfying Our Internal Customers".

Events in the planning stages for the fall include a New Member Orientation, a Senior Dinner and a roundtable discussion. We will also be busy assessing the results of our recent survey and planning to respond to the recommendations of North Star Marketing. Another agenda item for the fall is to solicit nominations for the upcoming officers elections in December and to fill several vacancies on the Board.

As you can tell, there's a lot to be accomplished and once again I urge you to consider helping out. Take a minute to consider the Top Ten Reasons to Volunteer for HRM-RI listed on the home page, and then give me, or any Board member a call.

Hope you've had a great summer and I look forward to seeing you on September 20th!

Employer Mandated Health Care

Produced by the SHRM® Governmental Affairs Department

Legislatures in at least 29 states are considering various types of legislation that would impact an employer’s discretion and flexibility when offering comprehensive benefits to employees. Current employer mandated health care proposals, also known as "Fair Share health care" or "pay or play," would require private employers with a defined number of employees to spend a certain percentage of their payroll on employee health benefits or contribute to the state's insurance program.

Because these proposals create a climate that jeopardizes the ability of HR professionals to provide effective health care benefits, SHRM opposes employer mandated health care initiatives. Click here to learn more (PDF).
