Bryant University Chosen to Host SHRM Student Conference
and HRGames Competition on March 28 - 29, 2008

Volunteers Still Urgently Needed

by David G. Greenan, Bryant University, Faculty Advisor - Student Chapter, SHRM, and Maureen Flaherty, Student Programs Specialist, SHRM

The second annual SHRM Northeast Regional Student Conference will be held at Bryant University in Smithfield, RI, on March 28 - 29, 2008. This event will combine the HRGames competition with a slate of educational and networking opportunities to add even more value to an already great program.

Over 20 colleges and universities, as well as HR professionals from SHRM National, Regional, and State Councils, plus HR managers from leading companies located in Maine to Maryland are expected to attend this highly informative networking event.

Volunteers are still urgently needed. If you can assist on either or both days of the event, please e-mail David Greenan at dgreenan@bryant.edu. Approximately 100 volunteers will be needed to help on-site during the event, especially for the HRGames matches on Saturday (judges, timekeepers, scorekeepers, etc.). For HRGames volunteer position descriptions, visit: http://www.shrm.org/students/hrgames/CMS_017100.asp.

The Student Conference will kick-off the afternoon of Friday, March 28, and will include opportunities for students to network with their peers and HR professionals; speakers who will inform, inspire, and entertain; a networking dinner. Saturday's schedule continues with educational sessions, career development opportunities, and the HRGames academic competition. The conference will close with a networking and recognition banquet on Saturday evening, which is an opportunity to celebrate all our students' successes. All participants are expected to stay for the banquet, so attendees are asked to schedule their travel plans accordingly. A formal agenda will be available online in the near future.

HRGames is an academic competition for SHRM student chapters. It provides a positive and exciting way to prepare students for the human resource profession and the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification exam conducted by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).

The HRGames competition is open to undergraduate student chapter members only. However, the educational content and networking opportunities provided by the Northeast Regional Student Conference are of great value to graduate students, student members who are not competing in the games, and student members-at-large -- all will benefit from attending this regional event. A whole schedule of non-HRGames activities are planned.

There is no fee to register for this event. Each student, chapter advisor, and HRGames team who will be participating in this event is asked to complete the conference registration form online at:

http://sapphire.shrm.org/studentvolunteerconf/default.aspx?ConfID=1

Registration will be open until Monday, March 24. Don't delay -- register today!

Youcher and Brousell Pass PHR Certification Exam

by Lauren Poniatoski, SHRM Student Chapter President, Bryant University Class of 2009

The members of the Bryant University Chapter of SHRM are extremely proud to congratulate our fellow SHRM Chapter Members (and recent Bryant graduates) Sherisa Youcher and Andrew Brousell. Both Sherisa and Andrew recently sat for the SHRM Professional Human Resource Certification exam and have successfully passed this phase of this prestigious professional certification process!

Well done, Sherisa and Andrew!!

Although both Sherisa and Andrew have both successfully satisfied the SHRM PHR exam requirements, they are still required by SHRM standards to be professionally employed in the field of HR for two years before they can fully claim their PHR Certification award status. Since Sherisa and Andrew are now both employed by the EMC Corporation in the area of HR, this final SHRM requirement should not be a problem.

All of us associated with the Bryant University Chapter of SHRM are extremely proud of the hard work and continued dedication performed by both Sherisa and Andrew and we wish each of them continued success in their HR professional careers.

Winners Announced for New "Target - Bryant Student Chapter of SHRM PHR Scholarship Award"

by David G. Greenan, Bryant University, Management Department Faculty Advisor - Student Chapter,
Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)

Acting on a request by my Management Department Chairperson, Dr. Lori Coakley, I have been working this year with The Target Corporation. The company responded favorably to my request and established a Target - Bryant Student Chapter of SHRM PHR Scholarship Award. Target will make an annual gift to Bryant so that two SHRM students may receive
a scholarship of $250 each to help pay for the Professional Human Resource (PHR) Certification exam. This year's recipients were SHRM Chapter seniors, Andrew Brousell and Rebekah Provost.
