Improving access to Behavioral Medicine can have a strong
impact on
reducing the overall cost of health care. Health care experts
estimate
that about 70% of all health care dollars are spent on illnesses
which
can be prevented or managed through Behavioral Medicine. Two
sets
of illnesses -- the "lifestyle disorders"
of alcohol abuse, obesity, and
smoking, and chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart
disease --
place emotional and financial strain and expense on patients,
their
families, and their employers.
Behavioral Medicine, a set of clinical interventions that
anticipate, treat,
and improve psychological and physical health simultaneously,
offers
promise in integrating and improving patient care while reducing
health
care costs.
Please join us for a morning symposium, sponsored by the Rhode
Island Psychological Association in association with Blue Cross &
Blue Shield of Rhode Island, that will address the cost of untreated illness
and employee productivity.
